Parking - From The National Trust for Historic Preservation
"Except in the economically strongest downtowns, rarely is the quantity of available spaces the issue. There are plenty of spaces. The issue is nearly always management of the parking that already exists."

"Preservation of historic properties and communities fosters community pride resulting in a more involved and informed citizenry. By preserving existing historic resources, a connection is established with our past. This connection sparks recognition that we have an obligation to responsibly manage our community for future generations."

THE SARASOTA HERALD BUILDING - THE WOMAN'S EXCHANGE

 A SPECIAL HISTORIC BUILDING Minimize

In 1984 the City selected this landmark building along with 23 other historic buildings and sites to be preserved as visual and tangible reminders of our city's history for today and generations to come.  It remains the only designated industrial building in this old district of commerce and it is the original home of our longest running daily newspaper !
The Woman's Exchange has made the building its home for 28 years.

The Laurel Park neighborhood residents and property owners realize the value of historic preservation.  The neighborhood has created an historic district, is working to preserve the streetscapes that significantly contribute to the area's history, design and scale.  The Woman's Exchange, is an individually designated National Register property and it is part of Laurel Park's National Register of Historic Places District.

On November 5th, 2007 the City Commissioners voted 5-0 to negotiate for
the purchase of an alternative location to meet the needs of future parking in the area.  Later the same month, the City Commission gave City Manager, Bob Bartolotta direction to negotiate with the owners of two sites to meet future parking needs.  The 2nd site is The Woman's Exchange.

CITY CONSIDERS PARKING GARAGE AT WOMAN'S EXCHANGE?
Monday August 20, 2007 The City Commission voted 5-0 to pay for an appraisal of the Woman's Exchange property. City Parking Manager Robert Kamper is urging the City Commission to consider purchasing this site to create a parking garage. THE CITY PLANS TO CONSIDER THIS ISSUE IN NOVEMBER. The LPNA will keep you updated. In the meantime you can view a map of the area and recommendations from studies in the documents below.Since 1969 Woman's Exchange has drawn hordes of shoppers and bargain hunters to the Little Five Points area of downtown. They have stimulated business and growth and become an anchor retailer while continuing to be a good neighbor to the residents of Laurel Park. Their successful business and service to the community is run out of the Sarasota Herald building, one of the first historic sites in Sarasota to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The building was constructed in the 1920's for industrial use, but beautifully adorned with an unusually attractive front facade. It became the home to one of the area's early newspapers, The Sarasota Herald. The first issue rolled off the presses and out the doors on Oct. 4, 1925.
